About Central Point, Oregon

Founded in 1889, the City of Central Point sits in the heart of Oregon’s Rogue Valley along Interstate 5, just 33 miles north of the California border, at an elevation of 1,282 feet.  The population is currently estimated at 17,375.  Governed by an elected council and mayor, the day to day operations of the city are led by the City Manager, who oversees a staff of approximately 75 full-time employees.

The area’s economy is based primarily on agriculture, tourism, timber products, and retail trade.  The world-famous Rogue Creamery and Lillie Belle Farms Artisan Chocolates are located in Central Point, as well as Dogs for the Deaf, Crater Rock Museum, the Grange Co-op, and Erickson Air Crane.  Businesses like Combined Transport trucking, Pilot Travel Center, and Fed-Ex and Reddaway transfer stations take advantage of Central Point’s proximity to I-5.  Plus, the Rogue Valley International Airport and Rogue Valley Mall are located within five miles of the city.

Excellent medical facilities are available in Central Point and neighboring cities of Medford and Ashland.  The Central Point school system, recognized for its many innovative programs, is comprised of Crater High School, Scenic Middle School, and three elementary schools.  Public higher education opportunities are found locally at Southern Oregon University, located in Ashland, and Rogue Community College with campuses in Medford, Grants Pass and White City.

Central Point is a wonderful place for residents and visitors alike.  The city cherishes its “small town feel,” hosting a variety of community events such as the 4th of July Freedom Festival, Community Christmas light parade, Citywide Yard Sales, Easter EGGstravaganza, and Friday Night Festivals in the Park.  We also hold an annual Battle of the Bones BBQ, Craft Beer, Wine and Music Festival, a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned competition.  A large water spray park and Oregon Fallen War Hero’s Memorial are featured in the many great neighborhood parks in the city.

The scenic Rogue River, the Pacific Crest Trail, and numerous mountains, lakes and wilderness areas provide recreational opportunities including hiking, camping, biking, swimming, skiing, boating, fishing, and rafting, and are all close by and easily accessed.  Cultural events in or within minutes of Central Point include the nationally acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Britt Music Festival, and a variety of events at the Jackson County Expo and Lithia Motors Amphitheater.  When conditions are right, hot air balloons can be seen floating in the crisp, clear morning skies over Central Point, and there are plenty of year-round golf courses in the valley.  The Central Point area is said to have a “Mediterranean climate” with hot, dry summers and mild winters.  The “warm season” (mid-June to mid-September) has an average daily temperature in the mid-80s and the “cold season” (mid-November to mid-February) has an average daily temperature in the low 50s.
