The best way to protect your property from flood damages is to avoid the hazard.  When not possible, then you can take  action to resist physical and financial damages before a flood occurs.  

Flood Insurance Offers Financial Protection

Buy flood insurance to protect your structure and/or belongings from financial loss.  The City participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, which means that anyone can purchase federally backed flood insurance.  It doesn't matter if you live in a high or low-to-moderate risk flood zone.  With 25% of claims coming from low-to-moderate risk flood hazard areas, this is good news.

Reduce Risk for Cheaper Flood Insurance

If you are paying high insurance premiums, your structure may not be built in compliance with the current flood damage prevention standards.  By retrofitting your structure to reduce risk, you have the opportunity to lower your insurance premium.  As a general rule, insurance premiums increase as risk of damage increases. 

When preserved as open space and properly managed, floodplains can provide natural and beneficial functions, including the following. 

Reduction in Flood Severity & Duration 

Natural floodplains are typically full of trees and plants adapted to periodic inundation.  Extensive root systems and hydric soils act like a sponge and absorb excess water, which can help reduce the severity and duration of flood events.

Hazard mitigation planning is essential to identifying and implementing actions to to reduce damages from future disasters. However, the Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan is not an operational response plan and it does not describe how the City will respond to natural disasters.  The NHMP is a framework that guides decision-making and policy development around the reduction or elimination of risk to life and property resulting from air quality, drought, earthquake, emerging infectious diseases, flood, heat, landslide, wildfire, windstorm, and winter storm events.
