Central Point Cemetery - Volunteers Needed!

Cemetery Headstone Repair Workshop

The City of Central Point became the owner of the Central Point Cemetery last December. Our primary goal is, of course, to improve overall conditions of the facility, but we do need help with regular maintenance and are seeking volunteers for this purpose. There are three areas that we will initially focus volunteer efforts on:

Adopt a Block Program: Since the cemetery is organized in blocks, the goal of this program will be to have a many of these block adopted as possible. Work would include weeding, trash pickup, trimming trees and brush, etc. We’ll schedule a workshop on cleaning headstones for all those interested. Expectation would be that block areas would be cleaned at least twice a year with a flexible schedule.

Headstone Repairs: Many of the headstone are in need of repair. Some have fallen over and others are leaning to a degree where they may eventual break. We would like to have a small crew of volunteers who will commit to this repair work. All those interested will need to attend a workshop that will be held this fall with Dirk Siedlecki from the Jacksonville Cemetery.

Plot and Headstone Surveys: We need to do a survey of existing conditions for the entire cemetery. This information will allow us to prioritize repairs and track future damage. We’ll provide everything needed for the surveys. This will be another long term project so folks who are interested can to do the work as time allows.
